Vaginal Health Supporting Habits for Women

Have you ever found yourself in public struggling to scratch that itch down there, struggling to walk with swollen twins down there or smelling yourself and fearing that someone near you may be smelling it too? Well, we can all agree that if your vaginal health is not in a good condition, it affects your wellness and daily activities.

Maintaining vaginal health is a simple task requiring very little effort that you can infuse into your daily routine. Many women have a misconception that they need many products that help them maintain their vagina in good health but it is quite interesting to note that the vagina is a self cleaning organ.

It’s health and functions are governed by the pH levels/ conditions therein, therefore tampering with the pH will result in vaginal health challenges like yeast infection, itching and bacterial vaginosis. Good personal hygiene and other healthy lifestyle choices help you to maintain vaginal health and wellness.

Vaginal Health Basics

For starters, let us define what the vagina is, seeing that many people confuse the vagina and the vulva. The vagina is a muscular and stretchy tube or canal like organ located inside the woman’s body opening outside the body to the vulva and connected to the cervix at the top. It is an organ for reproduction in women.

Vaginal health is a condition of balance in the environment of the vagina in form of balance of important healthy bacteria, moisture, tissue and acidity levels to foster protection against infections. Lactobacillus is the most prevalent healthy bacteria in the vagina (Chen et al, 2021).

The vagina secretes fluids/ discharge that help in it’s functions such as for lubrication during sex and self cleaning. The discharge may vary in consistency and color owing to the stages in your menstrual cycle, life stages as well as pregnancy. It is always good to pay attention to the the characteristics of the discharge at any given time so that any vaginal health challenges may be detected early on.

A healthy vagina is one which produces normal discharge, does not smell bad, does not itch and has normal tissue (Cleveland Clinic).

Common Vaginal Health Challenges

  • Vaginal dryness– especially experienced during sex when the vagina is dry and this happens during peri-menopause and menopause. Low estrogen during this phase causes this dryness.
  • Vaginitis– is a description of various conditions that cause infections and inflammation of the vagina causing foul smell, swollen genitals, irritation and itching. It can be caused by sexually transmitted infections, allergic reactions and hormonal changes. These conditions include yeast infections, Bacterial vaginosis, Trichomoniasis and non infectious and atrophic vaginitis.
  • Sexually transmitted Infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and genital herpes that cause abnormal discharge and painful sores disrupting sexual life and general wellness.
  • Vaginal prolapse, is the weakening of the vaginal connective and strength tissue which cause bulging of tissue in the vagina.
  • Vaginal cysts that may cause discomfort during sex.

How to Maintain Good Vaginal Health

  • Make sure your body is well hydrated by taking enough fluids that will help keep your vagina moist and vaginal tissue healthy.
  • Practice safe sex- by using condoms and having sex with one partner. Another habit to adopt is to always urinate after sex as this helps you to prevent infections. Some women experience yeast infections due to allergic reactions to male ejaculate and urinating right after may help prevent this.
  • Be gentle to your vagina by washing it only with warm or cold water, not using harsh soaps and feminine washes that normally disrupt the chemical balance or may kill healthy bacteria. Also avoid douching and washing inside the vagina since we have learnt that it is self cleaning. Do not use perfumes and harsh sprays.
  • Practice good hygiene by always keeping you vagina clean, wiping from front to back and avoiding using questionable substances that may disrupt pH balance or cause bad odor. Do not stay in damp clothes. Regularly change your sanitary wear during your menstrual period.
  • Wear cotton underwear that is breathable.
  • Eat well– a balanced diet helps maintain the vaginal environment. Probiotics like yoghurt are highly recommended for the maintenance of healthy bacteria whilst lots of fruits and vegetables are always a plus. Also limit intake of junk food, heavily processed foods and sugar.
  • Exercise and movement– exercise helps with maintenance of healthy and strong tissue to prevent tissue prolapse. A good example is Kegel exercises.
  • Regularly visit the gynecologist for check ups so that conditions may be correctly and quickly diagnosed.
  • Regular activity, good nutrition and staying hydrated during menopause may help manage hormonal balance.
